Understanding the Rituals of Umrah: A Beginner’s Guide

If you’re new to Umrah, understanding the rituals can seem complex. This beginner’s guide breaks down each step, from Ihram to Tawaf, so you can approach your pilgrimage with confidence and understanding.

If Umrah is new to you, its rituals can feel unfamiliar at first. The good news is that Umrah is a beautifully simple act of worship built around a few main steps. This guide gives a high-level overview so you can recognise each part of the journey. It is an introduction, not a step-by-step manual — for the detailed method, including exactly what to say and do at each stage, you should attend proper manasik classes and follow an experienced guide.

1. Entering Ihram and the Talbiyah

Umrah begins with entering the state of ihram — a state of spiritual purity and devotion that comes with its own intentions and conditions. Men wear the two white unstitched cloths; women wear modest dress. Pilgrims make the intention for Umrah and begin reciting the talbiyah (“Labbayk Allahumma labbayk…”), declaring that they have answered Allah's call.

2. Tawaf Around the Kaaba

On arriving at Masjid al-Haram, pilgrims perform Tawaf — circling the Kaaba seven times in remembrance and devotion. It is a deeply moving moment, joining millions before you in turning toward the House of Allah with hearts full of hope and humility.

3. Sa'i Between Safa and Marwah

After Tawaf, pilgrims perform Sa'i — walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah. This honours the trust and perseverance of Hajar (peace be upon her) as she searched for water for her son Isma'il, and reminds us of patience and reliance on Allah.

4. Tahallul (Cutting or Trimming the Hair)

Umrah concludes with tahallul — men shave their heads or trim the hair, and women trim a small amount. This marks the completion of Umrah and the exit from the state of ihram.

Learn It Properly Before You Go

This overview is meant to give you the shape of the journey, not the full detail. Each step has its own etiquette, supplications and conditions that are best learned in person. We strongly encourage every pilgrim to attend Noah Travel's manasik classes and to lean on our experienced mutawifs and Singapore group leaders, who walk beside you and guide each step during the journey itself — so you can perform your Umrah with confidence and peace of mind.
